Our History

In 1898, J.G. Hughes moved his pharmaceutical business from England Street into the two-story brick building which he had constructed at l06 South Railroad Avenue. He also built another building to the north which was used as the post office for many years. His drug store became a fixture for 84 years and the name Hughes can still be seen in the concrete plaque at the roofline. The upstairs was used as offices for the drugstore and even housed Town Council for a short time after a fire at Town Hall.

From the mid-eighties to 1993, the storefront attracted many businesses including Domino’s Pizza. In 1993, a gift shop occupied the space. The offices remained highly sought after with some folks waiting years until specific offices were available. Unfortunately, when the recession hit in 2009 the need for office space declined. Still, the offices remained at least partially leased until the end of 2013. When it ceased to be pursued for office space, the owners had to make an adjustment. A guest house – why not? And so it began…
